A practical checklist for core banking modernization

What institutions should clarify before replacing or wrapping a legacy core — from ledger design to tender readiness.

Modernizing a core is rarely a single cutover. Most successful programs combine a clear target architecture with phased module delivery.

Start with the customer and ledger model. If branches, digital channels, and finance cannot share one source of truth, every later integration becomes expensive.

Security and audit trails should be designed early: maker-checker, role boundaries, and exportable evidence for regulators and tenders.

Finally, insist on APIs. Whether you keep parts of the legacy stack or replace it, partners and mobile channels will need clean contracts.
